Project Scope
The City of Kamloops wanted to design and build a playground for McArthur Island due to the island's large usership area. They aimed to create a space that mimicked the natural environment with a softer aesthetic while ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all ages.
Objectives
- Develop a playground that blends with the natural environment using natural materials and colors.
- Create an inclusive, accessible space for all ages and abilities.
- Ensure high play value while maintaining safety.
- Deliver a durable, low-maintenance playground that aligns with the City’s long-term vision.
Challenges
- The playground had to be completed within a limited timeframe to meet the park's scheduled opening.
- Ensuring the playground remained both visually appealing and functionally inclusive required thoughtful planning and execution.
- The design needed to reflect the natural surroundings while maintaining durability and ease of maintenance.
Solutions
- Used engineered wood fiber (EWF) surfacing, natural color schemes, and wooden play equipment to blend seamlessly with the environment.
- Installed a variety of play elements, including the accessible "We-Go-Round," jungle gym, swings, slides, and sensory panels, to accommodate a diverse range of users.
- Integrated sensory panels and accessible pathways to accommodate children with diverse needs.
- Incorporated built-in seating and shade structures to enhance comfort and usability for families and caregivers.
