The City of Kamloops aimed to expand and revitalize the existing playground, focusing on creating an inclusive and accessible space that supports all levels of play.
Objectives
- Expand the play space while incorporating the existing playground to enhance continuity and usability.
- Introduce unique topographical features to create a dynamic and engaging play environment.
- Focus on inclusivity and accessibility to ensure children of all abilities can play together.
- Refresh existing features to create a more inviting and interactive space.
Challenges
- The project was approved later than expected with a challenging deadline, the team rose to the occasion, overcoming obstacles to successfully complete and deliver the playground on time.
- Carefully worked around existing play features to avoid damage while assessing, refurbishing, and reinstalling them to ensure compatibility with the new design.
Solutions
- Integrated five fully accessible play features to ensure inclusive play for all abilities.
- Expanded the playground by 6,000 sq. ft., providing more space for exploration and activity.
- Designed distinct play zones to accommodate various skill levels, including a Tot Lot (ages 2-5), an adventure zone for ages 5-12, and an active zone for ages 12+.
- Installed full PIP rubber surfacing for enhanced safety and accessibility.
- Incorporated sensory play elements to create a more engaging and inclusive experience.
